Plot
Virginia "Gin" Baker (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is an investigator for Waverly Insurance, tasked with tracking down a stolen Rembrandt painting in New York. Her prime suspect is Robert "Mac" MacDougal (Sean Connery), a notorious thief known for stealing high-end artwork across the globe. Mac quickly realizes that Gin is onto him and confronts her. Gin, however, plays her own hand, revealing that she is actually a thief herself and offers to assist Mac in a heist targeting a priceless Chinese mask from the heavily protected Bedford Palace.
Mac is intrigued but cautious, so he brings Gin to his remote Scottish castle to prepare for the heist. There, tensions rise as they clash over strategy and personal boundaries. Despite the growing attraction between them, Mac keeps Gin at arm's length, particularly as she pushes for more intimate involvement. Only Mac’s trusted ally, Aaron Thibadeaux (Will Patton), is allowed into their inner circle, providing them with the tools for the job.
As the heist approaches, Gin secretly updates her boss, Hector Cruz (Ving Rhames), from a payphone, unaware that Mac has bugged the entire island and is listening in on her conversation. This only deepens the trust issues between them.
The night of the heist, Gin flawlessly navigates Bedford Palace’s complex security system, evading lasers and alarms with precision. She steals the mask, but when the two make their escape, Mac becomes suspicious and confronts Gin. He threatens her with drowning, demanding to know if she’s actually working for Waverly Insurance, trying to trap him. Gin convinces him she’s a thief, and her insurance job is merely a cover. She then entices Mac with a bigger plan: a $1 billion heist in Kuala Lumpur, where she has created a security loophole to rob the International Clearance Bank.
In Malaysia, Gin’s plan intensifies, as she reveals the full scope of her scheme: a $8 billion heist planned for the North Tower of the Petronas Towers on New Year’s Eve, exploiting a vulnerability in the bank’s system. As preparations unfold, Gin is confronted by Cruz, who is furious at her sudden disappearance. Gin successfully convinces him that Mac is the mastermind behind the bank robbery, and her investigation is still on track. Meanwhile, Mac grows conflicted about their relationship, beginning to care for Gin, and tries to call off the heist. Gin, however, convinces him to go through with it.
In the final moments before midnight, as the millennium countdown nears its end, the heist begins. But Gin makes a critical mistake: she shuts down her laptop too soon, setting off alarms and putting their escape in jeopardy. In a thrilling sequence, Gin and Mac narrowly avoid capture, making a daring escape along the bridge connecting the two towers. They reach a ventilation shaft where Mac orders Gin to flee without him, promising they’ll meet the next day at Pudu train station.
Gin waits anxiously at the station, fearing that Mac has been captured or worse. But just as hope begins to fade, Mac arrives with Thibadeaux, who arrests Gin. Mac reveals that he’s been working with the FBI all along and that Gin was the real target of the operation. Cruz has only just learned the truth.
In the final moments, Mac slips Gin a gun and some documents that will allow her to escape the country. Gin, using the gun to stage a confrontation, holds Mac at gunpoint, threatening to kill him if the FBI tries to stop her. She boards a train, and the FBI agents follow her, thinking she’s getting away. But as the train leaves, Gin reappears—she had jumped trains mid-ride. In the final twist, she and Mac are reunited, and Gin suggests they team up for a diamond heist, setting the stage for more adventures to come.
