Gods of Egypt (2016) is an American fantasy action film directed by Alex Proyas, set in a fictionalized version of ancient Egypt featuring its gods and deities. The film stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Brenton Thwaites, Chadwick Boseman, Élodie Yung, Courtney Eaton, Rufus Sewell, Gerard Butler, Geoffrey Rush, and Bryan Brown. The story follows Horus, the Egyptian god of the sky, who teams up with a mortal thief on a quest to rescue his lover and stop the evil god Set from destroying the world.
Filming took place in Australia, with production handled by Summit Entertainment in collaboration with Thunder Road Pictures and Proyas' own company, Mystery Clock Cinema. The film had a budget of $140 million, but due to tax incentives and pre-sales, Lionsgate, the parent company, only faced a financial exposure of less than $10 million. The Australian government provided a 46% tax credit on the film's budget.
As production began, the film attracted controversy due to its predominantly white cast portraying Egyptian gods, leading to public backlash. In response, both Lionsgate and director Proyas apologized for the casting choices, acknowledging the lack of ethnic diversity.
Gods of Egypt was released globally on February 25, 2016, in various formats including 2D, RealD 3D, and IMAX 3D, and in North America and other markets on February 26. Despite its high budget, the film was a commercial failure, grossing $150.7 million worldwide, which only just covered its production costs. It received overwhelmingly negative reviews from critics and became a box office bomb, with the studio potentially losing up to $90 million. Additionally, it received five nominations at the 37th Golden Raspberry Awards.
