"My Old Ass" is a 2024 coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Megan Park. Starring Maisy Stella in her film debut, alongside Percy Hynes White, Maddie Ziegler, Kerrice Brooks, and Aubrey Plaza, the film follows Elliott, an 18-year-old girl who has an unexpected encounter with her 39-year-old self during a psychedelic mushroom trip.
Plot
Elliott is a teenager living on her parents' cranberry farm in Muskoka Lakes, Ontario, with just three weeks remaining before she heads off to university in Toronto. She spends her days boating with her friends, Ro and Ruthie, working on the farm, and navigating a budding romance with Chelsea, a girl she’s had a crush on since middle school.
On her 18th birthday, Elliott, Ro, and Ruthie go camping and drink mushroom tea, leading them into a shared psychedelic experience. During the trip, Elliott is shocked to meet a woman who claims to be her future self. Although initially skeptical, Elliott is convinced when the older woman reveals personal details—like a scar on her ribcage and knowledge of Elliott's asymmetrical breasts—that only she would know. The older version of Elliott, now a PhD student, gives her younger self cryptic advice about cherishing her time on the farm and bonding with her family. She also warns her to avoid a boy named Chad. Before they part ways, older Elliott puts her number in younger Elliott’s phone under the name "My Old Ass."
The next day, Elliott continues to communicate with her older self over the phone. In an attempt to follow the advice, she spends more time with her younger siblings, Max and Spencer. While skinny-dipping in the lake one day, she meets Chad, a guy working for her father. When he introduces himself, Elliott recalls the warning from her future self and initially decides to keep her distance. But as Chad proves to be kind, thoughtful, and engaging, Elliott finds herself increasingly drawn to him, leaving her confused about her sexual identity, especially since she thought of herself as a lesbian.
