The Wild Robot is a 2024 American animated science fiction adventure film produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures. Based on the 2016 novel by Peter Brown, the film is directed by Chris Sanders and adapted for the screen by him as well. It features the voices of Lupita Nyong’o, Pedro Pascal, Kit Connor, Bill Nighy, Stephanie Hsu, Mark Hamill, Catherine O'Hara, Matt Berry, and Ving Rhames. The story follows Roz (voiced by Nyong’o), a service robot who is shipwrecked on a deserted island. Stranded, Roz must navigate her new environment, build relationships with the local wildlife, and ultimately become the adoptive mother of an orphaned goose named Brightbill (voiced by Connor).
Roz protects the egg from a hungry fox named Fink, and when the egg hatches, the gosling imprints on her. Roz names the gosling Brightbill and, despite her own challenges, cares for him, determined to ensure he can fly before the winter migration. With help from Pinktail, an opossum with several children, Roz and Brightbill form a bond, with Fink even helping Roz build a shelter for the two of them.
As Brightbill grows, he learns to swim but is ridiculed by the other geese. When Brightbill discovers that Roz unknowingly caused the death of his family, he becomes angry, rejects her, and storms off. In an effort to make things right, Roz repairs another ROZZUM unit, who advises her to return to the Universal Dynamics factory. However, after speaking with Longneck, the leader of the geese, Roz decides to teach Brightbill to fly. She enlists the help of a falcon named Thunderbolt, and under her guidance, Brightbill eventually learns to soar.
As Brightbill joins the geese on their migration, Roz, feeling a deep sense of loss and questioning her purpose, reactivates her transponder in an attempt to make contact with Universal Dynamics. However, when her signal is detected, she hesitates and turns it off, uncertain of what lies ahead.
