Tomb Raider (2018) is an action-adventure film directed by Roar Uthaug, based on the 2013 video game. It stars Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, who embarks on a dangerous journey to uncover the mystery behind her father's disappearance. The film also features Dominic West, Walton Goggins, and Daniel Wu. A reboot of the franchise, it was shot in the UK and South Africa and released by Warner Bros. in March 2018. The film grossed $274 million worldwide but received mixed reviews. Although a sequel was planned, it was canceled in 2022 after MGM's rights expired. A new reboot, part of a shared universe, is in development by Amazon Studios.
After her father, Lord Richard Croft, disappears, Lara Croft works as a bike courier. When she’s arrested after a collision, her father’s business partner, Ana Miller, posts her bail and urges her to claim her inheritance. Lara reluctantly agrees and uncovers a hidden message from her father about the mythical Queen Himiko, warning her to destroy his research. Ignoring his plea, Lara travels to Hong Kong, where she hires a ship captain, Lu Ren, to take her to the island of Yamatai.
After a violent storm capsizes their ship, Lara is captured by Mathias Vogel, leader of a Trinity-funded expedition searching for Himiko’s tomb. Lara learns her father is alive, having stayed on the island to protect the tomb. Despite his warnings, Lara steals a satellite phone, contacts Lu, and stages a distraction to infiltrate the Trinity camp.
Inside Himiko's tomb, Lara discovers that the queen was an asymptomatic carrier of a deadly virus, which Trinity wants to weaponize. After a deadly confrontation with Mathias, Lara's father sacrifices himself to destroy the tomb and prevent the virus from spreading. Lara kills Mathias and escapes with Lu and the other prisoners.
Back in London, Lara formally accepts her inheritance and uncovers a connection between her family’s company, Croft Holdings, and the shadowy organization Trinity. Suspecting Ana's involvement with Trinity, Lara prepares for her next adventure, recovering her father’s jade pendant and buying pistols for future missions.
