Plot:
After the Pope's sudden death, the College of Cardinals, led by British Cardinal Thomas Lawrence, gathers to elect his successor. The top candidates are Aldo Bellini (U.S.), Joshua Adeyemi (Nigeria), Joseph Tremblay (Canada), and Goffredo Tedesco (Italy). Tensions rise when it’s revealed that Tremblay may have bribed cardinals, and Adeyemi’s secret past with a Nigerian nun threatens his candidacy.
As the election unfolds, Bellini works to block Tedesco, while Lawrence uncovers more secrets, including Tremblay’s corruption. Amidst the turmoil, Vincent Benitez, a surprise late arrival, steadily gains support. After a terrorist attack shakes Rome, Benitez, advocating for peace and love over politics, wins the papacy as Pope Innocent XIV.
Lawrence soon learns that Benitez, who had a canceled medical appointment, is intersex, a secret the late Pope had kept. Benitez explains he chose to embrace both his male and female aspects, and Lawrence agrees to keep his secret. The film ends with the election of a new pope, symbolizing a shift in the Church’s future.
