Two years after moving to San Francisco, 13-year-old Riley is starting high school, and her emotions—Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger—now manage her "Sense of Self," which shapes her beliefs. When Riley heads to hockey camp, new emotions—Anxiety, Envy, Embarrassment, and Ennui—arrive, clashing with the originals. Joy wants Riley to enjoy camp, while Anxiety pushes her to fit in and make the Fire Hawks team.
Anxiety takes control, causing chaos and straining Riley’s friendships. The old emotions fight to restore Riley’s original sense of self, leading to a clash of memories and a panic attack. Eventually, Joy and Anxiety work together to create a balanced "Sense of Self" from both good and bad memories. Riley reconciles with her friends and finishes her hockey tryouts successfully.
In a post-credits scene, Joy uncovers Riley's darkest secret.
