The Suicide Squad (2021) is a standalone sequel to Suicide Squad (2016) and the tenth film in the DC Extended Universe. Directed by James Gunn, the film stars Margot Robbie, Idris Elba, John Cena, and Viola Davis. It follows a group of criminals, known as the Suicide Squad, sent to the South American island of Corto Maltese to destroy the alien starfish Starro before it falls into enemy hands.

The film was a box office disappointment, grossing $169 million on a $185 million budget, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its simultaneous HBO Max release. However, it received positive reviews and became the most-streamed DCEU film on the platform.

A Peacemaker spin-off starring John Cena debuted in 2022, with a Waller series in development. Both shows are part of the new DC Universe co-created by James Gunn.

Plot:

Amanda Waller assembles two Task Force X teams, made up of inmates from Belle Reve, to carry out a mission in exchange for reduced sentences. The teams are sent to the island nation of Corto Maltese to destroy a Nazi-era lab, Jötunheim, housing the dangerous "Project Starfish."

The first team is almost entirely wiped out upon landing, with only Colonel Rick Flag and Harley Quinn surviving. The second team, led by Bloodsport, also includes Peacemaker, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Ratcatcher 2. Their mission is to find Flag, rescue him, and destroy the project.

The team learns that Project Starfish involves Starro the Conqueror, a giant alien that controls minds. Flag plans to expose the U.S. government's role in the experiment but is killed by Peacemaker, who is ordered by Waller to cover it up. As Jötunheim crumbles, Starro escapes and wreaks havoc on the island, killing the Thinker and much of the military. The squad fights back, with Ratcatcher 2 using rats to destroy Starro from the inside.

Bloodsport blackmails Waller into releasing the team and dropping charges against his daughter in exchange for keeping the evidence secret. In the end, Corto Maltese is freed from the dictatorship, and the surviving squad members are airlifted out.

In a mid-credits scene, Weasel survives his drowning and runs into the jungle. In a post-credits scene, Peacemaker, still alive, is assigned a new mission.
