Insidious: Chapter 3 is a 2015 supernatural horror film, written and directed by Leigh Whannell in his directorial debut. It serves as a prequel to the first two films and is the third entry in the Insidious series. The movie stars Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott, with Angus Sampson, Whannell, and Lin Shaye returning to reprise their roles.

Plot:

In 2007, three years before the Lambert haunting, teenager Quinn Brenner seeks the help of retired demonologist Elise Rainier to contact the spirit of her deceased mother, Lily, who passed away a year earlier. Elise reluctantly agrees but warns Quinn not to attempt any further contact after sensing a dark and malevolent presence.

Quinn's elderly neighbor, Grace, who suffers from dementia, starts speaking cryptically, hinting at an unseen spirit. After attending an audition for a performing arts school, Quinn notices a mysterious figure waving at her from a distance. Distracted, she is hit by a car, severely injuring both of her legs.

Now confined to her home with her father, Sean, and brother, Alex, Quinn begins to experience disturbing paranormal events, including visions of a dark figure wearing an oxygen mask, known as the Man Who Can't Breathe, the same entity she saw before the accident. Sean encounters Grace’s husband, Harry, who informs him that Grace has passed away.

In desperation, Sean asks Elise for help. She initially refuses, explaining that her previous experiences in the Further have left her traumatized, especially due to the evil spirit of the Bride in Black, who has been hunting her. However, Elise is persuaded by her old colleague Carl, who reminds her of her past success in dealing with spirits and encourages her to fight back, as she is stronger than the spirits because she is still alive.

As Elise hesitates, Sean calls on two online demonologists, Specs and Tucker, who investigate the haunting. During their investigation, Quinn becomes briefly possessed by the Man Who Can’t Breathe and attacks her father and the two demonologists. Sean realizes the pair are frauds and plans to kick them out until Elise arrives. Together, they deduce that the dark spirit is trying to drag victims into the Further to feed on their life force. Elise decides to enter the Further to confront the spirit and enlists the help of Specs and Tucker.

In the Further, Elise confronts the Bride in Black and briefly battles her before encountering Jack’s spirit. Jack tries to convince Elise to end her life so they can be reunited, but Elise realizes that Jack is the Man Who Can't Breathe in disguise. She orders him to release Quinn, and after a struggle, Quinn appears. Elise and the Man Who Can’t Breathe fight for Quinn before Elise escapes the Further, realizing that Quinn must defeat the spirit on her own.

Although initially at a disadvantage, Quinn receives help from Grace’s spirit, who reveals that Lily had written Quinn a letter before her death, one that Quinn had never found. Elise calls out to Lily’s spirit, and Lily appears in the Further, inspiring Quinn to fight back. With her mother’s guidance, Quinn stands up for herself and pulls off the Man Who Can’t Breathe’s mask, suffocating and seemingly destroying him. Quinn escapes the Further, and Elise offers parting words of comfort from Lily’s spirit.

Elise, Specs, and Tucker leave, agreeing to form a partnership. Later, back in her home, Elise’s dog begins barking at an unseen presence. Unbeknownst to her, a demon with a red face is watching her from behind.
