Moana 2 (also known as Vaiana 2 or Oceania 2 in some regions) is a 2024 American animated musical adventure from Walt Disney Animation Studios. It serves as the sequel to Moana (2016) and the second film in the franchise. Directed by David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller in their directorial debuts, the movie is produced by Christina Chen and Yvett Merino, with a screenplay by Jared Bush and Miller. The voice cast includes Auliʻi Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk.

Plot

Three years after her adventure with Maui and Te Fiti, Moana spends her time exploring neighboring islands, searching for others who are still connected to the ocean. During a vision, her ancestor Tautai Vasa reveals that the storm god Nalo sunk the legendary island of Motufetu, which once linked all the islands. Tautai warns that unless Moana can raise Motufetu, the people of Motunui will go extinct.

Moana assembles a crew consisting of the crafty Loto, historian Moni, and elderly farmer Keke, along with her companions Pua and Heihei. Their journey leads them across the ocean, following the path of a comet to find Motufetu. Meanwhile, Maui is searching for Motufetu too, to settle an old score with Nalo. However, he is captured by Nalo's enforcer, Matangi, and fears for Moana’s safety.

Moana’s group is captured by the Kakamora, a tribe of coconut-like pirates, who reveal their own disconnection from their island caused by Nalo. Kotu, a Kakamora member, helps Moana and her crew defeat a giant clam guarding Matangi’s lair. While rescuing Maui, Moana learns that Matangi is unhappy with serving Nalo and assists their escape.

As the crew prepares to confront Nalo, Maui warns that his realm is too dangerous for mortals. They are ambushed by Nalo’s monsters, which damage their raft, leaving them stranded. Moana, filled with doubt, is encouraged by Maui to press on. The group plans for Maui to lift Motufetu so Moana can touch it and break the curse. However, when they approach Nalo’s stormy domain, a fierce storm forces Moana to dive underwater to touch the island.

Just as Moana succeeds, Nalo strikes her down with a lightning bolt. Maui, desperate, dives after her and uses a chant to summon the spirits of Moana’s ancestors, including Tala. They revive Moana as a demigoddess, granting her a wayfinder's tattoo and the power to restore Motufetu. Maui regains his powers, and together they raise the island, reconnecting the people with the ocean.

The film ends with Moana’s return to Motunui, where she leads a flotilla of ocean peoples. A celebration is held in her honor. In a mid-credits scene, Nalo plans his revenge, only to be interrupted by the giant crab Tamatoa, who offers his allegiance.
