How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World (also known as How to Train Your Dragon 3) is a 2019 American animated fantasy film loosely adapted from Cressida Cowell's book series. Produced by DreamWorks Animation and distributed by Universal Pictures, it serves as the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014) and the final installment of the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. Directed and written by Dean DeBlois, and produced by Bonnie Arnold and Brad Lewis, the film features the voices of Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, and F. Murray Abraham. Gerard Butler, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Kristen Wiig, Justin Rupple (who replaces T.J. Miller), and Kit Harington also provide supporting roles. The story follows 21-year-old Hiccup as he seeks out a dragon paradise called the "Hidden World," while grappling with Toothless's new bond with a female Fury and confronting the threat of Grimmel the Grisly, a ruthless dragon hunter.
Discussions for a third film began in December 2010, with DeBlois noting that the second film was intentionally crafted as the middle chapter of the trilogy. The film’s release date was delayed multiple times due to distributor changes. The production also faced animation challenges, leading DreamWorks to develop new software to handle complex tasks, such as lighting the Light Fury dragon.
How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World premiered in Australia on January 3, 2019, and was released in the United States on February 22, 2019. Like its predecessors, the film was met with critical acclaim, particularly for its animation, voice acting, musical score, and emotional depth. The movie earned over $525 million worldwide and garnered multiple accolades, including five Annie Award nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, and a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the 92nd Academy Awards.
